To make a long story short, this illustration depicts a rediscovery of a civilization abandoned by people who were forced to move underground. The ones who discover this world on the surface used to live in the sky, above a huge cloud of darkness that covered the earth. These people descended onto the surface when the cloud dissipated. They used to live on giant, floating jellyfish in the sky (see my website to see how this looks like).
The image was started in Painter, then continued in Photoshop, then in Painter again, and then finally in Photoshop once more. It was my first real try in Painter. Maybe I'll use that program further on in a piece that allows for more of a painterly quality. The level of finish this required made it much easier to complete in PS. Took about 25 hours.
